IE515 – STEP 1

Step 1 of the new export system: IE515 – Export declaration

With the new export system, which was introduced by the Swedish Customs in October 2024, the export process in Sweden has become more modern and digitalized.

A central part of this system is the IE515 message, which is used to submit export declarations. When an IE515 is approved, the declarant receives a response in the form of the IE529 message, confirming that the goods are released for export.

Here we go over how IE515 works and how it fits into the new export process.

For detailed information about the other steps in the export process, you can read our articles on IE507 and IE590.

What is message IE515?

The IE515 is the first step in the new export process and constitutes the export declaration itself. This declaration contains details of:

  • Origin and destination of the goods.
  • Product codes, quantity and value.
  • Relevant licenses and permits.
  • The customs office of exit where the goods are to leave the EU customs territory.

When the declarant submits the IE515 digitally to Customs, the information is reviewed. If everything is correct and complete, the goods are released for export and the declarant receives the message IE529 as confirmation.

This is an important step because IE529 serves as a receipt that the export is approved.

IE515 in relation to IE507 and IE590

The IE515 is just the beginning of the export journey. After the export declaration has been approved and the goods have been released, the process continues with:

  • IE507 – Declaration of goods at the office of exit: This message is used when the goods arrive at the point of exit and ensures that the customs procedure is correctly completed at the customs office of exit.
  • IE590 – Goods Exit Notification: Once the goods have left the EU customs territory, this message should be sent to confirm that the export is complete.

While these steps have their own roles and requirements in the export process, they are dependent on the IE515 being properly prepared and approved for the export to run smoothly.
